Since its inception in 1997, the Technical Standards & Safety Authority (TSSA) has embraced its role of being the recognized authority for delivering public safety programs and services in the province of Ontario, Canada. As part of these activities, the TSSA created the Fuels Safety Program in early 2000, which governs and provides fuel-related safety services associated with the safe transportation, storage, handling and use of fuels.

As the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) dispenser infrastructure grows, so to does the issue of the possible mis-filling of DEF into a truck’s diesel fuel tank. If DEF is mistakenly put into a diesel tank, some serious and expensive engine repairs could be in order. While classified as a non-hazardous chemical, DEF can be extremely corrosive to some metals.

In 1990, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) passed amendments to the Clean Air Act establishing standards to control evaporative emissions from gasoline. These amendments required that service stations adopt Stage II vapor recovery systems that capture gasoline emissions that would otherwise be emitted into the air when automobiles and other vehicles are refueled at service stations.

As of July 2012, there were over 600 bulk dispensers located across North America that supply Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) to the trucking industry. In fact, TA Travel Centers of America just announced that it now has over 101 locations equipped with DEF pumps at over 400 fuel lanes; and Love's Travel Stops announced that it now has 782 fuel lanes at 148 locations.
